Six places from the series that are open to visitors, and most are an easy trip from Edinburgh.
Outlander was filmed across Scotland, and several of its most recognisable places can be visited. Some of them appeared under different names in the show, which are given below. Most are within an hour or so of Edinburgh, so you can see two in a day by car or tour. Opening times change, so check before you go.
A well-preserved medieval castle near Stirling, used as Castle Leoch, the home of Clan MacKenzie. It was also used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The audio guide is narrated by Outlander star Sam Heughan.
Jamie Fraser's family home in the series. The ruined tower house stands on the Hopetoun estate near South Queensferry. Entry is by timed ticket, so book ahead online.
A village on the Fife coast with 17th-century houses and cobbled streets, preserved by the National Trust for Scotland. It stood in for the village of Cranesmuir. Visit Culross Palace and its walled garden.
A historic Fife village with a royal palace, used as Inverness in the 1940s scenes. Walk the main street and visit Falkland Palace and its gardens.
A fortress on the shore of the Firth of Forth, shaped like a ship and used as the garrison of Fort William. It is run by Historic Environment Scotland, and the views from the walls cover the river and the Forth bridges.
A large ruined royal palace beside a loch, and the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. The exterior appeared as Wentworth Prison. It is a short train ride from Edinburgh.
Tip: Linlithgow is on the train line from Edinburgh. Blackness is a short taxi ride from there, so you can combine the two without a car.
