From bold coastal reds to fresh Istrian whites: the Croatian wines to order on your trip.
Croatia has a long winemaking tradition and more than 100 native grape varieties. Most of the wine is enjoyed at home, so a visit is the best way to taste it. Here are the wines to look for.
The most important red grape of the Dalmatian coast, grown on the sunny slopes of the Pelješac peninsula and on the islands. Expect a full-bodied red with dark fruit and spice. Dingač and Postup are two of the best-known Plavac Mali wines.
A dry white from the island of Korčula. It is full and aromatic, with notes of apricot and herbs, and it goes well with grilled fish and seafood.
The signature white of Istria. Fresh and citrusy, with a slight almond note, it is excellent with seafood and truffle dishes.
A deep red from Istria with bright acidity, often paired with the region's cured ham and stews. It is lively and dry, and a good match for hearty food.
The most widely planted white grape in Croatia, grown mainly in the inland region of Slavonia. It gives easy, fruity whites that are a good everyday choice.
A sweet dessert wine from Dalmatia, made from dried grapes. It is rich and amber in colour, and is traditionally served in small glasses after a meal or with dried figs and almonds.
Tip: ask for a "bevanda" (red wine mixed with still water) or a "gemišt" (white wine with sparkling water). Both are everyday drinks for locals, especially on hot days.
